You live your life with an eye toward betterment of the planet. You make green choices in your everyday life. You only consume products that are not harmful to the planet or to other human beings. You work to promote the causes that will end the planet’s problems and make the world a better place for all. Because these things are so important to you, shouldn’t you take the same care when choosing gifts for others? There are some important factors to consider when choosing responsible gifts, be they anything from housewarming gifts to baby shower gifts.
First, you should ensure that your gift is sustainable. A sustainable gift is one that could be produced in infinite numbers without end. As such, it must not be harmful to the planet in any way. Sustainable gifts should be created from recycled materials or natural materials that are organically grown. The process for manufacturing the item should be carbon neutral and contribute no pollution to the environment. In addition, you must consider the transportation costs and packaging of the product. Avoid items that are excessively packaged or that have been transported for very long distances. Alternatively, choose items with minimal packaging and buy domestic products instead of those that have been imported.
Next, you must determine if the gift is an ethical product. Many would argue that sustainable and ethical are the same thing but there are subtle differences. An ethical product is one that was produced by workers who have been treated fairly and are paid a fair living wage. Avoid products that come from areas known to exploit workers, or use child and/or slave labor. You should also make sure the item you choose is a useful item that will not end up contributing to a landfill and that it will contribute to green living for the recipient. Look for items that are certified by Fair Trade, the Rainforest Alliance, or other similar organizations as added proof that they are ethically manufactured.
